William F. Tate IV, current president of Louisiana State University, has been appointed the 22nd president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Following a comprehensive nationwide search by a 20-member universitywide search committee led by co-chairs Amy Towers and Alberto Cuitiño, Rutgers has named the renowned social scientist William F. Tate IV as the 22nd president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The Rutgers Board of Governors, with the advice and consent of the Rutgers Board of Trustees, approved Dr. Tate’s appointment at a joint meeting of the two boards on May 19, 2025. Dr. Tate will begin serving as president on July 1, 2025.

Dr. Tate comes to Rutgers from Louisiana State University, where he has led one of the country’s largest and most complex public university systems, encompassing multiple campuses, academic health system partnerships, and the flagship institution in Baton Rouge. Dr. Tate will succeed Jonathan Holloway, who will step down from his presidency on June 30, 2025. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tate and are excited about his vision for leading Rutgers to greater heights.
